Hairy Landing - 98 miles from S Pole
As reported by David
We took off from Union Glacier Camp and landed 98 miles from the South Pole at 2.15 am UK time. We travelled in two twin otters. We were told that there was bad weather so we were going to stay in at Union Glacier Camp for two days but we decided to try our luck and leave.
It was a five and a half hour flight and we re-fuelled at the Thiel Mountains.
It was quite a hairy landing because there was some very hard sastrugi [rough sandblasted snow texture]. We did at least 12 approaches and we all felt very sick. It is minus 35, potential minus 45 with wind chill, but blue skies.”
