Sleepless in Antarctica
We flew to Union Glacier and as I stepped off the plane it was so bright and so cold I knew I was in Antarctica.
We set up our two tents and checked everything.
My kit is really good because we went out skiing for about three hours yesterday and I actually got warm and had to take a layer off! Dad thinks it’s about minus 30 with wind chill.
It was very windy and noisy during my first night on the ice. I had my ear plugs in but I could still hear Dad snoring plus it was so windy the tent flapped and moved at one point. Then there was the noise from the airplanes all night long. I don’t think I slept much at all.
In the morning we went to the camp for breakfast where I had a bacon sarnie and a salmon sandwich. Luxury. I’m making the most of this good food before we are on our trek eating the dried food. I’ve been digging into my munchy bag eating lots of chocolate too.
We heard that there is a problem with one of the aircraft so we won’t be flying out to the farthest point south today and Dad thinks it’s unlikely we’ll fly tomorrow. I sneaked into my bag three good luck letters from my friends to read. I’ve even used my Lady Jane (pee bottle) in the tent. I just hope I can get some sleep tonight…
